Optimal Sand Transport Roadbed Geometry Structure of Taklamakan Desert Highway

what is design of experiments doe

One example of how to use characterization is in finding a starting point. Without going into too much detail (we promise to consider the nuances in another blog), some DOE designs allow you to investigate your experimental space broadly, without making too many assumptions. Ensuring stable expression of the gene encoding protein ‘X’ by the yeast can be a long experimental journey. But of course, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Characterization is about understanding the likely journey better.

Products and services

The independent variable of a study often has many levels or different groups. Thus, when everything else except for one intervention is held constant, researchers can certify with some certainty that this one element is what caused the observed change. This is sometimes solved using two different experimental groups. Changing one factor at a time (OFAT, left) means effects are easy to distinguish but there is less information on how factors interact, a critical feature of complex systems. Using statistical techniques to design experiments that explore combinations of factor settings allows their effects to be understood in combination (DOE, right).

Why Choose Six Sigma Methodology for Project Management?

Some factors are also qualitative, such as how much icing to use. These are measured in categories and are converted into coded units for linear regression analysis. Factorial Designs are commonly used in manufacturing to optimize production processes by simultaneously evaluating the effects of various process parameters (temperature, pressure, time) on product quality. Goodness in methodology goes beyond the technical, embedding an ethical framework within which experiments are designed and conducted.

DOE lets you investigate specific outcomes.

You probably follow a recipe so there are many additional factors that control the ingredients - i.e., a mixture. What parts of the recipe did they vary to make the recipe a success? Probably many factors, temperature and moisture, various ratios of ingredients, and presence or absence of many additives. Now, should one keep all the factors involved in the experiment at a constant level and just vary one to see what would happen? Instead of concepts like power and aliasing, which are relevant to determining which effects are real, RSM uses concepts relating to the errors when making predictions in the relevant design space.

Trial-and-error method

Aliasing is particularly useful during screening to explore more factors without incurring a huge experimental cost. [This blog was a favorite last year, so we thought you'd like to see it again. ].Whether you work in engineering, R&D, or a science lab, understanding the basics of experimental design can help you achieve more statistically optimal results from your experiments or improve your output quality.

In this way, the impact of the selected component can be tested at each variation. DOE Services from Quality-One include DOE Consulting, DOE Training and DOE Project Support, such as Facilitation, Contract Services and Auditing. Our experienced team of highly trained professionals will provide a customized approach for developing your people and processes based on your unique needs. DOE Consulting will assist with the design of your DOE process, review your needs and available resources to properly plan and implement DOE at your facility. DOE Training will help team members understand and perform DOEs effectively and efficiently.

Another way is to reduce the size or the length of the confidence interval is to reduce the error variance - which brings us to blocking. Then measure your chosen response variable at several (at least two) settings of the factor under study. If changing the factor causes the phenomenon to change, then you conclude that there is indeed a cause-and-effect relationship at work. Ultimately, assessing a particular fractional factorial is about deciding whether you can determine any of the particular higher order effects that you think might be interesting. Design of Experiments (DOE) offers a daunting compilation of types of design.

When analyzing data you can encounter a situation where you can’t tell whether, for example, an interaction between 2 or 3 factors causes a particular effect. You either have to use your existing knowledge to decide or, if necessary, do more experiments. If you look at many industries today you see similar products being offered by multiple manufacturers. Many companies today are frequently re-designing their products in an attempt to make their product stand out from the crowd. In addition, a great number of manufacturers are constantly developing new products to gain a foothold in other markets. Every time we change a design or process we introduce new content.

what is design of experiments doe

Our school teachers advocated a one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) approach to scientific experimentation. So, pick a variable (factor) and vary the value (levels), while keeping everything else constant. Each of these factors will have an impact on the final outcome of interior decoration. While variation in each factor alone can impact, a variation in a combination of these factors at the same time also will impact the final outcome. Once completed, Design of Experiments helps the Six Sigma project team better identify the combination of inputs that lead to the highest-quality product or service.

In the world of pharmaceuticals, you hear a lot about drug interactions. But taking them both at the same time can cause an interaction effect that can be deadly. During your experiment, you will have your experimental factors as well as other environmental factors around you that you aren’t interested in testing. You will need to control those to reduce the noise and contamination that might occur (which would reduce the value of your DOE).

The variance of the estimate X1 of θ1 is σ2 if we use the first experiment. But if we use the second experiment, the variance of the estimate given above is σ2/8. Thus the second experiment gives us 8 times as much precision for the estimate of a single item, and estimates all items simultaneously, with the same precision. What the second experiment achieves with eight would require 64 weighings if the items are weighed separately. However, note that the estimates for the items obtained in the second experiment have errors that correlate with each other.

When working in highly complicated systems and processes, such as in the production of biological therapeutics, DOE is the best approach to optimizing a process. In fact, what we are referring to when we say Design of Experiments (or DOE) is  a branch of applied statistics that can be applied to experimental design. This systematic method allows scientists to simultaneously investigate the impact of different factors on an experimental process, while also taking the interactions between factors into consideration. It allows manipulating multiple input factors and determining their effect on a desired output (response).

The research conclusions provide valuable scientific guidance for the design of sand control embankment structures tailored to local conditions for desert highways. This is of significant importance for enhancing the sediment transport capacity of desert highways and prolonging their service life. The term “Design of Experiments,” also known as experimental design, was coined by Ronald Fisher in the 1920s. He used it to describe a method of planning experiments to find the best combination of factors that affect the response or output. It is used to reduce design expenses because analysis of input parameters or factors gives way in identifying waste and which processes can be eliminated.

It demonstrated the method’s potential to make processes more efficient and sustainable. This case has been referenced in various discussions on the practical benefits of DoE in industrial engineering and quality assurance. This step requires using the most suitable tools and processes for data analysis.

At the heart of transformative research lies the Design of Experiments (DoE), a fundamental methodology that propels scientific inquiry to new heights of accuracy and insight. This approach not only refines the data collection and analysis process but also embodies the quest for discovering truths hidden within complex systems. The practice of Designing Experiments goes beyond mere data analysis; it is a philosophical commitment to enhancing the good by improving research methods and revealing the inherent beauty in data patterns. With each experiment designed, we step closer to insights that reflect the depth and richness of our reality, making DoE not just a technical necessity but a beacon of enlightenment in the scientific community.

Michael Sadowski, aka Sid, is the Director of Scientific Software at Synthace, where he leads the company’s DOE product development. In his 10 years at the company he has consulted on dozens of DOE campaigns, many of which included aspects of QbD. Numerous quantitative factors (e.g. hours of sunlight, grams of plant food, and liters of water) or qualitative factors (e.g. the cultivar) can influence the strawberry crop (Figure 2).

Live updates: NY building fire in Bronx apartment block

house fire

We break down the sequence of events in a typical kitchen fire to show how quickly the devastation can spread. When the two officers — one from East Lansdowne police and the other from Lansdowne police — arrived at the house, they were both shot once by someone inside and immediately returned fire, police said. The medical examiner will determine their identities and cause and manner of death, but officials have identified them as members of the Le family. The suspect, who is thought to be among the six bodies recovered from the burned and collapsed home in East Lansdowne, is believed to have shot at least one of his nieces, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said.

Common Causes Of House Fires And How To Prevent Them

house fire

If flames are visible from the outside when firefighters arrive, they immediately go into an aggressive attack strategy trying to ascertain if they can still safely save lives. Water simultaneously cools the burning debris (lower temps mean fewer flammable gases being generated) and can limit oxygen’s ability to fuel the fire. Firefighters may also vent off hot smoke and gases either by breaking open upstairs windows or cutting a hole in the roof. Spattered grease or oil residue on a dirty stovetop will ignite, causing flames to travel across the range. Oil residue on cooking utensils also ignite, and other combustibles like paper towels, paper or cardboard packaging, and dry dish towels nearby will begin to smolder or burn. Smoke—a deadly cocktail of hot gases, including carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, water vapor, hydrogen sulfide and unburned hydrocarbons (i.e., ash or soot)—rises up off the flames with the heated air.

Doors where deadly Bronx fire broke out were not functioning appropriately, fire commissioner says

Our house fire example starts on the stovetop since cooking fires account for almost half (44 percent) of all home fires. A few seconds is all it takes for a pot or pan to boil over the rim, spilling flammable oil-laden contents directly onto the cooking flame or red hot electric burner. In a few hundredths of a second, grease or other fatty substances ignite into flames. The flashpoint of many common cooking oils is around 600 degrees F, but when gas or electric burners are placed on high, temperatures can approach 1000 degrees F. Outdoor cooking with grills, barbecues, grease friers, fire pits and wood stoves can all be a source of unwanted house fires as well. Be sure to position these tools away from the side of your home and nowhere near a wooden fence or any other highly combustible materials, and never leave them unattended while they are actively producing flames or heat.

Keeping Children Safe

Preparedness is key, as accidents can occur, so it is always important to have a fire escape plan in the event of an emergency. Practice your fire escape plan, make sure everyone in your home knows what to do and keep your designated exits clear, clutter-free and accessible at all times to minimize damage and potentially save lives. President Biden called New York City Mayor Eric Adams to extend his support on Monday as the city reels after a major fire impacted an apartment building in the Bronx borough, leaving at least 17 dead.

Kelvin Jeremiah, the president and CEO of the Philadelphia Housing Authorities said, "The unimaginable loss of life has shaken all of us at PHA. It is too early for us to say more."

All leaders thanked first responders for quickly arriving and helping those at the scene, and also thanked New Yorkers for the outpouring of support to help the fire victims. Officials are working with local agencies to help displaced families in the short-term to get them back into their homes as soon as possible, which might be as early as this afternoon, Gibson added. Torres was joined by Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson and local city council members Oswald Feliz and Pierina Sanchez to announce the initiative on Monday. Nigro said it did appear the alarms were working as a neighbor called to alert the Fire Department of New York to the building alarm. There was much discussion about the door mechanism, and the commissioner took the opportunity to deliver a public service announcement to residents to check and get those issues fixed if they notice them. Psaki said she was “not aware” of any requests for assistance from the federal government but the White House would remain in close touch with officials in New York.

Electrical and Appliance Safety

The good news is that most accidental house fires can be avoided with proper education on the causes of house fires and how to practice fire safety. Identifying potential risks within your home and eliminating potential sources that could stoke and spread flames—heat, oxygen and fuel—can help lower the chance of a house fire. Previously, Dinesh Indala, senior executive vice president of operations for the PHA, said officials determined six smoke detectors and three carbon monoxide detectors were functional during that inspection.

After a major fire, dry wall is left dehydrated and crumbling and will need to be replaced. Given the high temperatures of large fires, most if not all of the home furnishings may be rendered unusable. Small grease fires may be extinguished with a fast response of turning off the heat, smothering the fire with a metal lid or sprinkling baking soda or salt on the flames. Use a fire extinguisher if available, though the cleanup of chemicals will be extensive.

NYC mayor outlines how to help after the Bronx fire tragedy

Indala said the latest inspection on the other unit, the A Unit, was on April 23, when two smoke detectors were installed. “An inspection reflects seven smokes and three carbon monoxide present,” said Indala. Flames pour through the doorway into the neighboring living room, setting the carpet and upholstered furniture on fire. Synthetics like polyurethane and polyester foam in sofas, pillows and carpets release tremendous amounts of heat. Back in the kitchen, the blaze has penetrated the wall and ceiling and flames travel quickly through unseen structural vertical shafts in interior walls and horizontal shafts between floors.

Fire testing conducted by UL has found a home with mostly synthetic-based furnishings can be entirely engulfed in less than 4 minutes. In as little as 30 seconds a small flame can become a major fire that ravages a home and threatens the lives of the people inside. According to Glenn Gaines, the Deputy U.S. Fire Administrator, fires kill more Americans each year than all natural disasters in the United States combined. And even if individuals are spared, fire can cost tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage—up to $50,000 to rebuild a kitchen engulfed in flames.

house fire

Philadelphia Deputy Fire Commissioner Craig Murphy described the deadly fire at a city row home as "one of the worst fires" he's ever been to. Seven of the at least 13 people killed in a fire in a Philadelphia building were children, according to Philadelphia Fire Deputy Commissioner Craig Murphy. “We actually had to replace two batteries and two smoke detectors,” said Indala. City Council President Darrell Clarke praised the work of the Philadelphia Fire Department in a statement, pledging support to both first responders and the families as the community starts to recover. "I’m having a hard time finding the words to express my deep sorrow for the heartbreaking loss of 13 lives, including 7 kids, in this morning’s fire in Fairmount," Kenyatta said on Twitter. "This weighs heavy as we mourn those lost and keep hope for those being treated in the hospital."

Remember, never to attempt to extinguish a serious house fire without professional help, and call your local fire department while you safely evacuate the scene. The remains of 10 people, including three children, were found in the rubble of a rural Pennsylvania home that was destroyed in a fire Friday, state police said. At least 17 people died, including eight children, and dozens injured, according to updated numbers from the city.

His children and the other young victims were visiting their aunt and uncle’s home for swimming and other summertime fun, he said, adding that 13 dogs were also in the two-story home. The landlord has offered to pay for 140 hotel rooms for all those who are displaced, and is also offering some housing unit alternatives at other properties to families whose unit is no longer habitable, said Torres. He also said the investigation would be looking into whether the alarm system went off regularly or if individuals smoking in hallways set off the alarms, among other potential issues. Wague lives on the third floor of the building with his eight children, who range in age from 6 months to 18 years old.

Fires from smoking also tend to be more deadly as they often ignite while the resident is asleep as the result of smoking in bed or on a sofa. Mattresses are highly flammable—and though many modern models come with flame retardant protections—it only takes a single stray ash to set ablaze blankets, clothing, carpet or other flammable fabrics to create devastating results. The kitchen presents myriad flammable factors that should never be left unattended or unsupervised while cooking, especially on the stove or oven.

Fadera told CNN he was heading to the hospital to speak with victims of the blaze. He said he is still working with city officials to determine exactly how many Gambians were affected – but there’s no doubt, he says, that the fire has devastated the community. “Today, the President spoke with New York City Mayor Eric Adams to express his heartfelt condolences and offer support following yesterday’s devastating fire at a Bronx apartment building," the White House said. White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that President Biden expressed his heartfelt condolences and offered support to New York City Mayor Eric Adams following Sunday’s devastating fire at a Bronx apartment building.

Hello Kitty Birthday Cake Design How to Make

simple hello kitty cake design

The provided tips for final presentation also ensure that your hard work pays off in showcasing your decorated Hello Kitty cake at its best. In addition to texture and shading, paying attention to small details is what will set your Hello Kitty cake apart. Taking the time to meticulously craft these details will result in a show-stopping final product that will delight both children and adults alike. Texturing techniques can be used to give Hello Kitty’s fur, bow, or other features a more realistic and eye-catching look. This step is often achieved through various tools such as fondant embossers, texture mats, or even using simple kitchen utensils to create patterns and designs. By following these steps, you can ensure that you have a perfectly baked cake as the canvas for your Hello Kitty design.

Frosting

simple hello kitty cake design

To make this cake, I started by drawing kitty’s face on paper and then cutting it out, then tracing the shape on a 9″ round cake with toothpick pricks. I mixed in some rose pink tint to white frosting to make the pink layer of the cake. In order to make the frosting easier to spread I whipped it with my mixer until it became light and fluffy. If the consistency is still too thick add a teaspoon of water to thin it out. I make all my kids birthday cakes – I have four kids – but this was cuter than even I hoped it would turn out.

What cake recipe should you use to make your perfect cake come true?

A stand with a cute bow or pastel colors can enhance the overall presentation of the cake. To ensure that your Hello Kitty cake has a sturdy base for decorating, consider placing dowels or straws in the bottom layer before stacking additional layers on top. This will help support the weight of the upper layers and prevent them from sinking or shifting during transportation.

With practice, you’ll be able to achieve that flawlessly smooth finish. I have seen many a Hello Kitty cake in my lifetime. I have also scoured the internet for Hello Kitty cake ideas. I tend to gravitate towards cakes with fondant or gumpaste for Hello Kitty figures because they look smooth and well-polished.

Step 4: Add the White Scallops and the Pink Bows

simple hello kitty cake design

Another important aspect of fine-tuning and detailing a Hello Kitty cake is shading. Shading can add depth and dimension to the cake design, bringing it to life and making it visually stunning. Use a basic buttercream or cream cheese frosting as these work well for decorating and piping intricate designs. Add in food coloring to achieve the signature pink, yellow, white, and red colors of Hello Kitty’s face and bow. The cupcakes are 1/2 hello kitty picks and 1/2 chocolate iced with hand shaped hello kitty faces. On the cake I used store bought white icing with red food coloring for the pink.

Using a fillet knife he then carved the rough image of the Hello Kitty birthday cake. You can find many online or you may use ours as a guide, just print out. Then he started icing, filling in the rough spots; sometimes freezing it to get it hard and then going over it. The border was piped using my extruder tool and attached to the sides for the plaque with shortening (image 2). I have prepared a separate tutorial on how to get your wordings on your cake well centered and you can read all about it here. For the bow, I used my teardrop and round plunger cutters to make 2 teardrops and one small circle of fondant and attached them on Kitty as its bow (image 3).

What Can I Put on a Cake Instead of Frosting?

Transfer the black paste into a piping bag, fitted with a small round piping tip (1mm in diameter). Transfer the red and the plain paste into separate piping bags. You can use any designs you like, but my Hello Kitty cake template can be downloaded from the button below.

I use a white cake mix and add sprinkles so I can get more color in the batter. Bake three 5-inch cakes according to the recipe or until the toothpick comes out clean. I made two sets of bite sized cupcakes – one set for the side of the cake and one set for the top of the cake. For the cupcakes that go on the top of the cake, I color the miniature peanut buttercups in pink luster dust. Color two sets of swiss meringue buttercream in pink white and pink. Pipe a little frosting with your favorite tip (I love the 32 tip!) onto mini peanut butter cups to make a “cupcake”.

Word-of-mouth believes that the two front rooms on the main floor were dedicated to the original Post Office of Charles Town, SC. Although the Barksdale House appears to be Victorian, it is actually the Regency Style typical of the Federal Period (early 19th century). While the construction date of the house was never documented, George Barksdale, to whom the house is now attributed, bought the land in 1778. He was a wealthy Charleston planter and one-time member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. He spent most of his time at his country residence, Youghall Plantation, but served a term in office as a tax inquirer and collector for his home parish. George's nephew, Thomas Barksdale, constructed the house on this property sometime between 1778 and 1817.

Restaurant Review: The Shakopee House

shakopee house

"After surviving COVID and the mandated shutdowns that came with it, we thought we had made it through the darkest days hospitality would ever see. In many ways, this is worse." In the south building is Pimento Market, which will offer a curated selection of "gifts and goodies" from more than 20 mission-driven BIPOC vendors. I came here when it was Dangerfield and now came back to a new name restaurant (felt the same). The atmosphere was welcoming and the server was really nice.

View Menu

Located in the pavilion's north building, it will be open seasonally. Donatell said for original supper clubs, most food was either French or Italian-influenced with some “Americanized” cuisine. The 100-plus-year-old building is crawling with history—a treasure trove of speakeasy lore and memories of a felonious past (literally, as the new owners found relics between the walls and behind bookshelves).

HISTORICAL FINDS

Had the parmesan shrimp appetizer and fish and chips. Shakopee House hopes to continue this legacy of long-established and respected restaurants in the building. To Donatell’s knowledge, all of Dangerfield’s employees will continue with Shakopee House.

The space, which in previous lives was a Timber Lodge Steakhouse and an Asian buffet, has been transformed into a light-filled dining space along with a 40-seat patio. Other Yum locations are in St. Paul, Minnetonka and St. Louis Park, and all are open daily from 8 a.m. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board will open the new and improved Bde Maka Ska pavilion on Oct. 20, featuring a market and restaurant from Pimento Jamaican Kitchen. So fun, excellent food recommendations, very helpful and attentive. They are very fortunate to have such an amazing server. Plans were initially to keep the Dangerfield’s name and a similar theme, Donatell said.

"So they didn't take too kindly to the prohibition rules." When owners started renovating the old Dangerfield's, they discovered a treasure of artifacts in the walls.

The restaurant should be fully remodeled by mid-November. After seven years in downtown Excelsior, Red Sauce Rebellion (205 Water St., Excelsior, redsaucerebellion.com) is closing. Oct. 7 will be the last day of service for this Italian spot, where chef/owner Eli Wollenzien put creative twists on classic dishes. The building has been sold to another restaurant group, according to a social media post from the restaurant, and its lease is ending at the end of the month. Sister restaurant Coalition, just a few doors down, will remain open.

But when construction began in June, he and his team made historical discoveries that inspired a new idea for the space. This restaurant space has been in Shakopee for around a century, once home to restaurants like The Millpond Club and a previous Shakopee House. Dangerfield’s owner Gus Khwice and staff more recently celebrated their restaurant’s 30th anniversary last December. Shakopee House, a brand new supper club, is taking over from Dangerfield’s.

There is good news for fans of the lower-level rum bar. Rum Row will be moving to Chanhassen, to the backroom of the restaurant group's Tequila Butcher. "This move will allow us to keep our fun, tropical tiki bar alive in a beautiful space that won't flood and has a covered patio," Donatell wrote. Donatell and his team got in contact with Cumberbatch’s family and learned more about his life. He was a “rum runner” during prohibition, regularly traveling between the United States and the Caribbean. Shakopee House, a new supper club in town, has made menu and decor renovations to bring guests back in time to a 1940s-era supper club and speakeasy.

Early bird pricing is $29-$34 for kids, and $39-$44 for adults. For more information and tickets, go to bucketlisters.com. In brighter news, Zhora Darling is now open in northeast Minneapolis (509 1st Av. NE., Mpls., zhoradarling.com). The bar and restaurant take over the former Red Stag Supperclub, now with neon lights and a couple of pool tables. The menu, designed by Five Leaves — a Brooklyn restaurant — offers small plates, salads and sandwiches, including one with grilled pineapple, a pickled beet and a sunny-side-up egg.

As with many historical supper clubs in the Midwest, somewhere along the line rum became all the rage. During last fall’s renovation on the former restaurant, Dangerfield’s, a century-old leather suitcase was discovered in the basement rafters. It belonged to a man named Lawrence H. Cumberbatch, a “rum runner” during Prohibition and former bartender in the building—hence the building’s Caribbean-themed basement tiki bar called Rum Row. Supper Clubs are popping up all over the Twin Cities. The newest addition is in Shakopee, in the former Dangerfield’s space. While the main floor of Shakopee House gives off 1920’s glam, the basement offers something quite unexpected.

Interpretations of the cocktail recipes found in his suitcase will be drinks offered at the tiki bar. After struggling to get a bar to show a Gophers women's softball game this past spring, the idea for the Twin Cities' first women's sports bar was born. Stay up to date at abaroftheirown.com or follow them on social media. "You can tell he was passionate about what he had learned and his adventures and his journey," Donatell said.

When the federal government came in and shut down all the illegal stuff that was happening in Shakopee, they put the gambling machines behind this wall and sealed it off,’” Donatell recalled. Additional findings within the building have included a moving bookshelf and decades of information gathered through the historical society. The restaurant is currently serving a bridge menu to help ease the transition into Shakopee House and see what menu items customers are gravitating toward. Remodeling has also taken place downstairs, where the Rum Row Basement Tiki Bar is being established. Rum Row centers around a tropical vacation feel and a bit of escapism, Donatell explained. The basement is expected to open in about two weeks.

Southwest News Media

The supper-club-style Shakopee House opened late last fall, and reimagined itself once again with a Cajun and Creole menu earlier this year. The size of the space (with two floors and four patios), two floods and the economic challenges facing restaurants are the reasons for the closure, wrote Tony Donatell, owner of the Hospitality Collective restaurant group, on social media. "We missed the target of what this community was looking for, didn't hold ourselves to the standard we set, and made changes too late." With his family’s permission, Cumberbatch’s dream has now been brought back to life with the creation of Rum Row.

HISTORICAL FINDS

The restaurant owner was able to figure out who’s briefcase it was and even spoke with his family. He was a rum-runner during prohibition who had dreams of opening is own bar. They’ve done it for him in the basement of Shakopee House. The supper club and tiki bar’s themes are heavily inspired by the building’s century-long history. Shakopee House CEO and co-owner Tony Donatell (pictured) and his team found historical relics during construction, including this leather travel case tucked away in the basement ceiling.

More from CBS News

To revive the great Minnesota supper club tradition while giving humble classics (think platters and prime rib) a fresh update. Pimento on the Lake (3000 Bde Maka Ska Pkwy., Mpls., pimento.com) will offer beachy twists on Pimento Jamaican Kitchen's popular food and drink menu. Pimento's Tomme Beevas joined forces with the team from Lola on the Lake, which operated the Bde Maka Ska concessions building before it burned down in 2019.

"He put together recipes for cocktails. He had rum in there, he had post cards from his travels and his adventures. We used what we found and some of the stories from his family to create the rum row concept for the basement." Historical finds during construction included a leather travel case belonging to Lawrence H. Cumberbatch, a bartender who used to work in the building. Within the case were a number of postcards from his travels, maps, cocktail recipes and a collection of rum, gin and whiskey from the early 1900s.

The supper club is in the transition process, still running under the name Dangerfield’s, and looks to be fully rebranded with the new name by mid-November. The suitcase belonged to Lawrence H. Cumberbatch, a bartender who used to work in the building. Findings inside are on display near a staircase leading down to Rum Row. The suitcase is on display as you make your way down the staircase, where bamboo-lined walls and a faux canopy of greenery melt your worries away.

Beyond remodeling changes, Shakopee House’s new feel is also reflected in updated menus for both the supper club and tiki bar. The wait is over — the Malibu Barbie Cafe is opening Oct. 27 at the Mall of America (60 E. Broadway), and tickets are now available. Each reservation at the fast-casual restaurant includes a 90-minute dining window, a choice of entree and side dish, and access to exclusive merchandise and Barbie-branded interactive activities, from a life-size Barbie box to roller skating. Tickets for the concept, from Mattel and Bucket Listers, are priced according to when you visit and what you order (entrees range from sandwiches and salads to breakfast favorites and have to be selected at checkout).

Also in the basement, tucked behind a curtain in the back corner is Mezcaleria, an intimate candlelit Oaxacan-style mezcal bar. Here, traditional dishes are enticingly elevated—such as the juicy bone-in pork chop topped with a sweet-and-spicy pineapple medley. Surf fans will love the seared-to-perfection walleye fillet and creamy mushroom risotto. The handcrafted cocktails and after-dinner drinks are equally appealing, like the Lavender Lady, made with crème de violette and a frothy egg-white top. "Its sheer enormity, with four bars, four patios, and multiple dining rooms, coupled with not just one but two floods in our first year, proved too great of a challenge to overcome during this economic slowdown," the post said.

New supper club ‘Shakopee House’ replacing Dangerfield’s Restaurant

At the same time, it’s an ode to the restaurants past. During renovations, the team discovered a suitcase in the walls. Inside were post cards, bottles of rum and drink recipes.

Chandeliers, new light fixtures, button back chairs, gold accents and additional decor choices have been added to embody this era. The Rum Row Basement Tiki Bar is inspired by Cumberbatch, who wanted to open a Caribbean-themed basement bar while working at the Millpond Club but passed away before he could do so. Owner Tony Donatell wrote in the announcement they would work to secure staff positions at his other restaurants where possible, noting some are currently short-staffed.

The drink menu has been updated, as well, with more whiskeys and spirits being added to the bar as well as a brand new wine list. Classic, prohibition-era cocktails are also a focus, Donatell added, with signature cocktails looking to become a priority in the future when the restaurant is fully switched over. The main dining space will be remodeled to look like a supper club of the era. A stage will also be set up in the main dining room, where live entertainment like cabaret shows, comedy shows, “burlesque brunches” and jazz performances can be put on for guests. Donatell said plans for Shakopee House are to do “their version” of a supper club, heavily inspired by 1940s-era supper clubs and speakeasies.

“(We’ll) try to activate that stage as many nights as we can and kind of make this an entertainment destination as well as food and beverage,” Donatell said. After 30 years of being known as Dangerfield’s Restaurant, the historic restaurant location on First Avenue in Shakopee is entering a new chapter. A nod to Prohibition-era Shakopee, the likes of which John Dillinger and the notorious “Baby Face” Nelson would frequent. "It's almost like a tribute to somebody in his industry."

The Deep South attracts history buffs with its Civil War battlefields and cemeteries and 18th- and 19th-century mansions guarded by regiments of live oaks. Both cruise lines offer a Lower Mississippi river cruise, sailing round-trip from New Orleans, but only one features multiple excursions geared to those with a keen interest in the 19th-century conflict. Two river cruise lines—American Queen Steamboat Company and American Cruise Lines—offer departures from the Port of New Orleans, sailing on the Mississippi, one of the longest rivers in the world. These all-American cruises introduce passengers to people, places and culture of the cities and towns along the way.

Itineraries This Ship Sails

There are a few different paddle-wheel riverboats that cruise this route for American Queen Voyages — find the specific ship for your journey when you select a date. There are three main cruise lines traveling the Mississippi, with journeys ranging from less than a week to more than 20 days. Spring and fall are the best times of year to take a cruise along the river, as you'll avoid the summer heat and winter chill and enjoy more pleasant weather while you take in the surroundings. In addition to visiting monuments and museums, you'll enjoy onboard lectures and presentations and interaction with other Civil War buffs. These sailings are aboard 150-passenger American Heritage and 180-guest American Melody, American Serenade, American Splendor and American Symphony. This itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on four American Cruise Lines ships, ranging from the 150-passenger classic paddlewheeler American Heritage to the 180-passenger modern riverboat American Serenade.

Especially popular are the Mardi Gras on the River sailing in February and the holiday sailings around Thanksgiving and Christmas. The 386-guest Viking Mississippi® was “floated out” in Louisiana, marking a major construction milestone and the first time the ship has touched water. Set to debut in summer 2022, the Viking Mississippi will sail Viking’s highly anticipated voyages on the Lower and Upper Mississippi River, between New Orleans and St. Paul. The challenge modern travelers now face is when, where, and how to go about this iconic American voyage.

The weather is usually mild with less likelihood of rain, and autumn colors are beginning to paint the shoreline. Keep in mind, however, that the Mississippi is the fourth largest river in the world—so temperatures any time of year are not going to be the same in warmer Louisiana as they are in cooler Minnesota.
